Over the years, coffee has become a mainstay in the life of Elite In-Home Personal Training clients and many other health and fitness enthusiasts everywhere. It gives you a burst of energy when needed and best of all, it helps keep the fat off!

Some weight loss clients have been advised to drink 2 cups of coffee in the morning before a workout to help reduce body fat.  The client will wake up and drink 2 cups of coffee on an empty stomach. By the time they are finished, their Elite In-Home Personal Trainer should be at their door waiting to take them through another exciting workout.

The caffeine in the coffee will boost their endurance by prolonging fatigue and help the client burn just body fat. What many people do wrong is they eat a meal right before a workout and then wonder why they crash during a workout. Unfortunately, following the routine just outlined instead of the routine outlined in the second paragraph will only maintain or worsen your current weight and body fat levels instead of tapping into and burning your excess body fat storage to lower those measurements.

Some other benefits to drinking coffee are:

  • improvements to long term memory
  • stimulates the bowels
  • natural diuretic

Of course, plenty of clear liquids should be taken in to flush out toxins no matter how much coffee is consumed.

The only proven negative effect of coffee is that unfiltered coffee beans have compounds that could possibly raise your blood cholesterol as much as 20 points. Basically, stay away from coffee made in a French press. Many people claim the flavor is better but obviously not healthy for the body. Therefore, drink only filtered coffee!!

A couple of tidbits of information about caffeine:

  • 1 shot of espresso has less caffeine than regular coffee
  • 1 cup of tea has more caffeine than regular coffee
  • 1 cup of coffee can enhance your alertness

So, go ahead and have a java jolt and enjoy! Take advantage of the benefits a hot cup of coffee can do for you. One short, skinny latte to go could add amazing results to your life!!

There are many theories out there about aerobic or cardiovascular exercise breaking down the lean tissue in the body. Aerobic exercise (exercise w/oxygen) should be a vital part of your regular fitness program. You are not only burning calories but you are using the most important muscle in your body – the heart.

As your heart is pumping blood throughout the body you are increasing the amount of oxygen and the size of the blood vessels in your body. These blood vessels supply oxygen to the tissues including your muscles. The oxygen also carries out waste products to help with recovery and growth of tissue.

What type of cardiovascular activity is best for you and your goals? Running, jogging, and jumping rope are all examples of high impact aerobics and may tend to break down muscle tissue, burn more calories and with the presence of an improper nutrition program may lead to muscle loss. Walking and cycling at low to moderate intensity levels are examples of non-impact to low impact cardiovascular activities that will potentially minimize the breakdown of muscle tissue.

Determining what your ultimate goals are, whether overall weight loss, body fat loss or gaining lean body mass, will help you determine what type of cardiovascular exercise is best for you to reach your goals. It is very important to choose a type of exercise you will enjoy and will not cause boredom. Cardiovascular exercise must be performed for no less than 20 minutes. A slow, steady and long duration program will achieve greater fat loss results when done on a consistent basis.

One tip to achieving faster results is to complete your aerobic activity first thing in the morning prior to breakfast with plenty of water. Since your body has been burning calories during the nights sleep, body fat will be utilized as energy in the absence of glycogen in the blood stream.

In conclusion, the muscle tissue in your body is vitally important for longevity and ultimate weight control. By incorporating a regular weight training and cardiovascular exercise program in your daily routine, you can add years to your life and life to your years.

Hot Tips! Burn Calories!

Below, you will find five HOT TIPS on how to burn more calories, but first a little background:

Your metabolic rate is the rate at which the body burns up calories. A body that consumes 3,000 calories per day and burns 3,000 calories a day will stay at the same weight. A body consuming 3,000 calories daily but burning only 2,500 will gain weight at the rate of about one pound a week. You burn calories to provide energy for three main functions:

To Support Your Basil Metabolic Rate:

This is the amount of calories you burn just by being alive, even when you’re doing nothing. It accounts for approximately 60 percent of calories you burn.

To Provide Energy For Your Daily Activities:

This is the energy used during every day activities like lifting your arm to button your shirt or cleaning your house. This accounts for approximately 30 percent of the calories you burn.

Dietary Thermogenesis: These are the calories burned in the process of eating, digesting, absorbing and using food.  You can influence all these factors, and speed up your rate of burning calories by using the following tactics:

  • Build muscle: Increase the amount of muscle in your body. For every extra pound of muscle you put on, your body uses around 50 extra calories a day.
  • Be active: The average person burns about 30 percent of calories through daily activity; sedentary people only use about 15 percent. Taking every opportunity to move can make quite a difference to the amount of calories you burn.
  • Eat spicy foods: Spices, especially chili, can raise the metabolic rate by up to 50 percent for up to 3 hours after you’ve eaten a spicy meal.
  • Aerobic exercise: High-intensity exercise makes you burn more calories during exercise and for several hours afterwards.
  • Eat little often: Eating healthy small regular meals will keep your metabolism going faster than larger, less frequent meals and often helps control hunger, making you less likely to binge.

Quick Tips: Doing just 10 minutes of Plyometrics a week can significantly increase your fitness level by making you faster and more agile however if you’ve never attempted a plyometric training program before, we recommend you contact a certified personal trainer first to ensure that you ar edoing the exercises properly.

Hey Everyone!

Today marks Elite In-Home Personal Training’s five year anniversary and I decided that this would be an opportune time to let you know how Elite In-Home Personal Training got started as well as  highlight some of our accomplishments to this point.

I’m sure some of you are wondering why we aren’t doing something exciting to celebrate this milestone in a small businesses lifespan.   The answer is ironic actually, because I am currently on the tail end of a 20 week diet and am only three weeks away from competing for the title of Mr. Contra Costa, four weeks away from competing for the title of Mr. California!  It’s Ironic because I had just won my first bodybuilding competition and had a photo and article printed in FLEX magazine around the time I made the decision to take the plunge into entrepreneurship.

I was still in college at the time, and although winning my first bodybuilding competition was a great accomplishment, it didn’t translate into more income and well, I was putting myself through college and things were very tight.  Business was so slow that I had to start making more money right away or I was going to be in trouble. I explained my situation to our fitness manager and told me he didn’t want me to go and asked me to do my best to hang on until things picked up again.  I told him I could only afford to wait another two weeks then I would have to give a two week notice and look for another job. I prayed about this a lot. I really enjoyed helping people grow and do things they never knew they could do, and I was good at it.

A few days later I was training a client when I noticed an unfamiliar face walk into the gym. I was hoping he came in to ask about working with a personal trainer but when he left shortly after he sat down I put the thought out of my mind.  A couple days later the fitness manager gave me his contact information and told me to call him and explained that the reason the guy came in was because he and his wife preferred to work with a personal trainer at their house instead of the gym.  I called later that day and we scheduled a time to meet later that week.  We met and everything went well and he, his wife and I felt it was a good fit.  Before I left we came to an agreement, shook hands and we began working together and continued to do so for nearly three years.

It turns out this guy was a very successful entrepreneur who started his own business when he was 22 years old and never looked back.  Up until this point I had never met someone like this; someone who was very successful in a business they built from the ground up.  Not too long after we started working together he suggested that I start my own business.   He told me there was a need that could be filled and that I should be the one to fill it.  The example he set and those few words of encouragement was enough to inspire me to take action and on  May 5th, 2005,  I opened Elite In-Home Personal Training for business!

It is now 2010 and my team and I have reached a number of important milestones.  By the spring of 2008 I had built Elite In-Home Personal Training up to the point where I was able to quit working at the gym and focus on my business full-time.   I’ve been very fortunate to meet and work with some awesome individuals since then and I would like to think they feel the same about me.  Elite In-Home Personal Training’s staff has helped a lot of people improve their lives for good through health and fitness.

We have also helped three of our associates make positive changes in their lives as well.  I remember one of our team members saying, “If I didn’t have a job with Elite In-Home Personal Training, I may not have graduated.”  He graduated with a BS in biology and is now trying to get into medical school to become a doctor.  Another personal trainer that we brought on was able to graduate with a business marketing degree.  We now have an office located on K Street in Downtown Sacramento right across form the Convention center and serve all of Sacramento as well as the smaller surrounding communities.

Thanks to everyone who has supported us in the past as well as everyone we will work with in the future.  The link below is to  the song I will be  using for my posing routine at the Contra.  It’s a must listen! What’s next? Stay tuned, check back often! Thanks again!
